How to Write A Blog Post

Customers often ask how they should create content for their websites. There are a few basic steps anyone can follow to create interesting, high-quality content for their blog or website.

Choose a Topic

The first step is to choose a topic. Ask yourself a few questions to get started. What is relevant to my industry? What am I interested in that might interest my customers as well? What current events have an affect on my industry? What websites are available that I might source for ideas? I recommend writing a list of 10-20 topics from which you may select, and then narrow it down to your best 3-5 ideas. Once you have your best options for the topic, move on to the next step.

Create an Outline

Each article you compose should make 3-5 primary points. They should be relevant to the topic and informative to the reader. More than 3-5 points can be too long to keep your reader interested, so it’s helpful to keep your articles short and to the point.

Describe Each Point

Once you’ve decided on the points you will make, write a short paragraph describing each one. It is helpful to include examples, statistics, and stories to make your point. Be sure to tell the reader why what they are reading applies to them. Use sentence variation and make sure your grammar is correct. Reading an article filled with spelling and grammar errors might be enough to turn away your readers.

Write Introductory & Closing Paragraphs

Now that you’ve completed the body of your article, the introduction and closing paragraphs should be easier to write. Knowing where to start is often the most difficult part of writing, so I suggest you do this last. In the introduction, briefly explain what your article is about, why the reader should keep reading, and mention each of the main points you will go into more detail about in your article. In the closing, do the same and include a call to action to the reader. A call to action might be to ask the reader to subscribe to your blog, ‘like’ your Facebook page, or give you a call to ask about your business.

Writing an article for your website doesn’t have to be difficult. Think about topics that are relevant to your industry and might be interesting to your customers. Choose the topics for which you can write a paragraph about 3 – 5 main points, and then write those paragraphs. Once you’ve written the body paragraphs, return to the introduction and conclusion of your article. Remember to ask your customer to do something, such as subscribe to your blog or inquire about your services.
